EDUCATIONAL
PROGRAMS |
|
| |
We
are proud to share our expertise among the general public by
way of interactive sessions through radio and television media,
thus, creating awareness of a person’s ‘sense
of hearing’. The programs explain the
aspects of ear, nose and throat ailments to school and college
students and also for those who suffer from such ailments. Free
camps and counselling services for all E.N.T.problems are being
conducted. |

INTEGRAL
EAR INSTITUTE |
|
| |
Vikram
Hospital and E.N.T. Research Institute is a specialised international
referral centre established in 1972 in the south of India,
under the leadership of Dr.P.G.Visvanathan and Mrs.Muthulakshmi
Visvanathan, with a deep commitment to help patients with
deafness and hearing impairment. On 27th of January 1999,
it celebrated its Silver Jubilee, and inaugurated the Integral
Ear Institute (IEI) – a non-profit, charitable rehabilitation

Project
– Hearing for all |

Deafness is something people
rarely come across in the course of their lives. The moment
parents are told their child is deaf, the impact can be shattering.
It could mean the beginning of a long and difficult process,
requiring tremendous amount of patience and dedication. Oral
education gives a deaf or hearing impaired child the opportunity
to interact with the rest of the world. The process consists
of early identification, sound amplification and intense auditory
and vocal rehabilitation. |
|
| |
Early
Identification |
|
| |
Early identification of these
children is one of the essential issues as the initial 6 years
of a child’s life are the most crucial years for speech
and language development. In countries like India where the
awareness is very low, we routinely see children past the age
of rehabilitation even at the time of initial diagnosis. |

Our
aim is to :
|
|
| |
 |
Create awareness |

Provide affordable
sound application devices |

Provide effective rehabilitation |

Sound
Amplification |
|
| |
Devices like hearing aids and
cochlear implants achieve sound amplification. Cochlear implant
(Computerized bionic ear) is an electronic device by which even
profoundly deaf children can hear. Unlike hearing aids that
simply amplify sound, implants are designed to provide sound
information even in children obtaining little or no treatment
until the last few decades. However, costs are still prohibitive
as the implant is imported, and parents are left in a dilemma
inspite of being highly motivated to make their children hear.
A feasible solution would be the development of a universally
affordable low cost implant, in the direction of which we have
been facilitating research. |

Cochlear
Implant |
|

Until recently, Cochler Implant
surgery was seen to be too expensive and too sophisticated to
be available in most developing countries. Such development
are now within easy reach of these children at Vikram Hospital
due to our commitment to provide all the latest available medical
and technical innovations. Several successful cochlear implant
surgeries have been performed, providing a cure for deafness
for which there was no treatment until the last few decades.
However, costs are still prohibitive as the implant is imported,
and parents are left in a dilemma in spite of being highly motivated
to make their children hear. A feasible solution would be the
development of a universally affordable low cost implant, in
the direction of which we have been facilitating research |

Rehabilitation |
|
| |
Rehabilitation is individually
based on the hearing loss and intelligence of each child, and
the ability of the parents to supplement the efforts of the
school. Today, children who are deaf are actually listening
and speaking, due to continued efforts from parents, teachers
and professionals. They can go to school, play any game and
listen to music just like any other child. We believe that every
child deserves the right to communicate. Our mission is to assist
children in developing to their fullest potential, to access
mainstream education, and to integrate into the community at
large. |
